Hey guys,

Sorry I have been away for a while, but now I am back and have more to show. I have been working on a series of children illustrations. I also appologize that you can't see them very well. They were not scanned but photographed with my camera phone.

This one I did for a lady whose son is in prison and she asked me to draw a picture of him as a little boy to send to him in prison to brighten up his day.

She gave me an adult picture of him because she didn't have any children picture of him, so I used his facial expression on the picture to use for the illustration. she described how he looked as a child. After doing this for her, I thought about continuing on and drawing personal children illustrations.

This one is a Native American Blackfoot girl. There is a reason i left space in this drawing. I was to have space to put the word Oaklahoma, because the blackfoot tribe is in Oaklahoma. I was collaborating with a grafitti artist. Oaklahoma was going to be done in Grafitti style.

Artist this Afternoon- Marketing Strategies

Ok, this morning I just got my business cards from FedEx Kinkos with a picture of my new book on it. I am ready to go only if I had the copies of my book with me right now, but that will not be for another week. That would surely help me a great deal in marketing my book, but God is good and always faithful and will provide other ways to market my book.

So today I have planned to go and pass out my business cards inside libraries. A friend suggested that I stand outside book stores like Barnes & Noble and get incoming customers to asks the clurk if they had "Meet Pooky The New Kid" by Domonique Mayhawk so that the store could start looking for the book to purchase to have in stock. I plan on calling elementary schools to schedule book readings of my book and donate a book to the school. Another thing I was thinking about doing is calling radio stations to have maybe an interview.

If you have any marketing tips, please let me know I would love to use it!

Artist Sunday Afternoon- Book is almost released! Yayyy!

The image is cropped to protect me! But this is one of the illustrations from my book "Meet Pooky"! Thank you Jesus, I finished the illustrations and my production team is in the process of working on the layout! I am glad to be finally done with illustrating for my book! This new Pooky character will be used for Gods glory to reach the hearts of children. Pooky will be used in a way to show the love of Christ.

Some people say she reminds them of Dora the Explorer, but she is Pooky the Explorer for Christ. She represents African American Children of the slums of Detroit. God is truly good, and I believe God will make the city of Detroit a great city again and more African Americans will learn that they are great in Gods eyes just like other people of other ethnic backgrounds are great in Gods eyes!

Artist This Morning - Publisher for Meet Pooky

Praise Jesus! I finally got a publisher for my book Meet Pooky, it was only by his grace that I got it. I got a publisher called XLibris last Tuesday and caught their great deal, it was just in time. I was procrastinating a lot and didn't know when I was going to get a publisher but I think it was worth the wait because I got them at the right time.

They work pretty fast, they just finished copyediting my manuscript and it is now ready for production stage! I have done 8 illustrations so far, if I keep up the fast pase then it will be ready for publishing by the end of July! So look out for "Meet Pooky" on xlibris.com in the future! Praise God, He is truely and awesome God!

I wanted to give an update on what I have been doing on Children Book project! The other night I stayed up very late researching different publishers and looking for agents! I must say I have found some good ones and I actually sent my manuscript to an agency called CB Agency and they have been very helpful in contacting good publisher for me.

Last night I bought a really good book called "How to Write an Illustrate Children's Books and Getting Them Published" has been very helpful guiding me through the process!

This page 1 illustration turns out to be just a rough draft because I was experimenting with the colors I bought, using Prisma Color Pencils. I think the illustration layout is going to be a little different! I also drew up a rough storyboard layout of my book and illustration.

This is Pooky that I created about a month ago, and I wrote a children book manuscript and now in search of an agent so that I can get this book published. Pooky is a little girl from Detroit that moved to Ann Arbor and she is in the 4th grade.

I think I am going to illustrate this book by hand drawing and coloring instead of by computer! I am excited about Pooky and what she represents. She represents children from all inner city slums that are overlooked! I want to tell a story of what it was like to live in the slums especially from a African American point of view and the lifestyle that these children live in but in an innocent perspective!

I hope this will be a fun book for all children to enjoy and get to know Pooky and where she is from. I especially hope this will inspire children in inner city environments. They will get to know how change in environments sometime forces a person to change and how being different has to be accepted.

I have just researched a bunch of children book illustrations competitions and found a couple that I really want to enter. I just joined Drawn, which is a wonderful site for illustrators to join that will get their names out there and view other illustrators work. I am tired but can't stop searching for other opportunities because my job as an illustrator for this children book that I'm currently illustrating for is almost to it's end and need motivation. The only way for me to keep up my motivation is to constantly search for job opportunities and competitions in this field.

I have just started writing my own children book and am halfway to finish writing it. I will illustrate and try to enter it into some competitions. I have found a couple of publishers but I may need and agent, so I'm also looking to find one. I have a lot on my plate.

ARTIST EARLY BIRD- GIRAFFE ILLUSTRATION

It is 8:12 am and I decided to illustrate a giraffe this early in the morning. I wanted to illustrate it digitally because i want to start getting used to doing it this way. I still love to do it the old fashioned way by hand. But I want to get used to the fact that technology is now being used to do illustrations. I think I will start using design programs to illustrate my characters, but I will not stop doing it the old fashioned way. I think there is something about my hands that can create that the computer cannot, originality! I don't like the fact that the computer can create something for you! I like using my hands when it comes to creating characters and drawing and coloring.

I want to start getting used to illustrating animals more, starting with this giraffe. I went to the zoo this past October and there was something about the giraffe that just fascinates me. The long neck and the fact that it can kill a lion with just one jab, but they seem to be one of the most gentle creatures on earth.

I haven't been on posting anything for a while, you will have to forgive me! I wanted to give you an update on my current illustration project I'm doing for the author Sherry O'Neal, which is soon to be finished this week actually! I am almost done with illustrating the book "LJ and the Dreammaker", praise God, but I will miss doing the work for her!

I am soon to be starting another illustration project for another author! I must say, I love this job even though I am told it is not a steady job. I could make it a steady job, anything is possible. But for right now, I am working another steady job along with doing what I love most! I am trying to put myself out there to be known as a children book illustrator. Ok, I finally put up the illustration that I drew yesterday morning today. By this time you should know that I am obsessed with drawing children and their mothers. But later I will get into children with their fathers. This is my daily illustration diary.

This one has no color because I'm running out of color. But soon I will add color. I've always loved children even as a kid I loved babies. I can't wait to have children myself. Kids inspire me to do children books.

This is an illustration of an Asian child pretending to be Michael Jackson singing the famous "Billy Jean" while the mother peeks in the room and watches him.

I want to illustrate children of all ethnic backgrounds. My next kid I want to do is a Native American full blooded Blackfoot kid wearing full blackfoot attire. I have blackfoot in my family line, but I'm mixed with many ethnicities so after that I want to get into drawing mixed kids with their parents. There aren't many books out there that shows mixed children. One book that I would really like to get is the book called "I'm your Peanut Butter Big Brother" by Selina Alko!

The Illustration for today is called "Pequena Laura Loca" Crazy Little Laura! I'm not done with it yet, I ran out of some of my colors so I need to buy more!

Laura and her mother moved up to a small town called Goodville from Mexico. She is an energetic little 9 year old nina with an imagination that runs wild and ends up destroying beautiful things. Every kid, parent, teacher, store owner and police officer knows what Laura is capable of. But with the good heart that she has they can't help but to love her!

I'm beginning to love Laura myself! I can't wait to get started with the story! She is like the next "Dennis the Mennis" but only likeable!

I have a heart for children who are underprivileged and who live in inner cities! Children who can't get a good education because of the school system! I not only care about children in Detroit where it is needed most in Michigan, but children in general.

I grew up in Detroit, and as a child living in the slums of Detroit there wasn't many educational opportunities. And even today schools are being torn down in Detroit. Detroit is # 1 for poverty rate!

I hope that Detroit gets better, but I do have memories of the slums and vacant houses. Children can't help where they live, they do need a chance for higher education so that they can rise higher than where they are. Children are the future and the earth will became a better place if they get the education that they need. Detroit will become a better place if people lend a hand to the educational system.

Ok, I wanted to get my hands on my oil pastels today! I hadn't used them for a while! I got up at about 9:30 to draw this "Watch Out Now" picture! A picture of a lady with sort of a funky hair style that my aunt used to wear back in the day when I was a child and I still remember to this day! I hear that a lot of the 80s hair styles are coming back such as the High top fade! So "Watch Out Now" is what I'm going to say to my readers today!

Watch out for the new things, watch out for some of the old things that will come back! These funky styles will become popular again! Or they already have!

HOW DID I GET THIS JOB?

How I got this job as an illustrator for the author of the children book "LJ and the Dreammaker was a blessing from the Lord! I had just graduated with my BFA and I was browsing through the university art career opportunity website and found an ad that someone was looking for an illustrator for their new book. It was a competition to find out who was best for the job. I prayed about it and I decided to go for the competition. The author provided a sample from her manuscript and we had to illustrate from that.

She didn't describe the boy as a Caucasion or an African American so I decided to draw him as a mixed kid from the inner city. I decided to do various drawings describing the manuscript and put in a sample page layout, and I colored the drawings using different grays. This drawing of various LJ's helped me to also find the right look for Carlos (LJ's Latino friend), I was intending on drawing LJ, but the middle character came close to LJs look and the character to the right came close to Carlos. A friend of mine from Canada also went for the competition! After praying about it, I decided to turn it in. Weeks had gone buy and I then heard from the author by email saying that she decided to choose me. I started to praise God with leaping and shouting with my roommates. I then met up with her in January 09 and she said that I was the only one that came close to the vision she had of LJ. But I then had to work on the Dreammaker because she had pictured him somewhat different so I had to try to capture her vision of him! The book is just about done, and we are both excited! I love the characters. This is my first real illustration job and I pray that there are more out there waiting on me!

I'm just weeks away with the finishing touches of the children book I'm illustrating! Yayyyy! This is my first book, and I've been working with the Author for a long time! I'm taking parts of pictures to let you see who LJ is! He is a kid from the big inner city and lives in the slums. He goes Brandelo Elementary school, and he continues to stay in trouble until one day he meets the Dreammaker who shows him his life in the future.

LJ is a real trouble maker in class along with his friends Chris (Caucasian) and Carlos (Latino).

I enjoyed working on these illustrations. I'm not much of a modern illustrator, because i love the idea of coloring by hand. I do plan on doing modern illustrations in the future.

MY PHOTOGRAPHY WORK

I also do photography, here are some of my work I've done in college. These are photographs of dancers from the dance school taken in a studio at the Art school. I do head shots and motion shots.

If you need a photographer to do your head shots I am the one that you are looking for. I do all types of photography, from head shots to wildlife and plants to weddings. I provide my own sony camera.

Here are some other work I've done that included setting up a scene and taking photographs of it.
This is called my "Apple Series", I built a scene for my apples to have as a backdrop. One of my photographs was compared to the artist Matisse.

The photograph to the left is the photo that reminds me of the Matisse painting of the apple covering his face.

The photograph to your right is more of like a classic photo of apples. it gives you that classic style sense, with the light coming from the window using natural light.

Tamale Recipe for Today

I am making Tamales today, this is my first time so it should be interesting. Help me God, LOL!

Anyway, here are the ingredients:

1 pork roast (6-8 pounds)
1 large chicken (5 pounds)
Garlic powder (large bottle)
Chili Powder (We use Gibhardts but any will do)
Cumino (Cumin)
Corn Oil

Cut the roast in fist size and put in pan to boil, boil the pork roast for 2 1/2 hours or until tender and when tender shred the meat and get rid of the fat. Save the pork roast broth for later. Do the same for the chicken and shred meat off the bones. When done with both combine them and add the seasoning, and mix together with fingers for 10 minutes.

Spices and Seasonings:

1/2 c corn oil
6 Tablespoon Gibhartds chili powder (Other Chile Powders will work)
3 Tablespoon garlic powder
3 Tablespoon ground cumin (comino)
1 Tablespoon (or less) black pepper
2 Tablespoon salt.

After meat and seasoning is mixed put in fridge and put both the chicken and pork roast broth in the fridge. Now ready to make the tamales. Take MaSeCa flower about 2 lbs. of the Masa flour. Now, skim the fat off the broth that you saved from the Pork and Chicken we made earlier. Throw the fat away, and save the broth. Warm the broth from the pork and chicken up. Don't get it hot, just nice and warm.

Now put the 2 lbs. of Masa in a large bowl. Add the following dry spices to the Masa:

3 Tablespoons paprika
3 Tablespoons salt
1 Tablespoon cumin seeds
3 Tablespoons Gibhardts Chili Powder
3 Tablespoons garlic powder

Mix the spices above into the Masa until it is completely incorporated. Mix well, as you don't want a clump of spices in a tamale.

2 cups of Corn Oil

to the Masa and Spice mixture. After adding the oil, begin to slowly work in 2 quarts of the warm chicken/pork broth, about a cup at a time. Work the mixture with your hands to make dough. Slowly add the warm broth one cup at a time as you continue to work the mixture with your hands. If it is too dry, add enough warm water to get it right for spreading. It should be about like thick peanut butter. If it is too thin add more Masa, if it is too thick, add more broth or warm water. Thick peanut butter is the consistency you are trying for.

B) Prepare the Corn Shucks

Soak the shucks in a sink full of warm water for about 2 hours. You will need to carefully separate them when they get soft. Try to not tear or damage the corn shucks. It is easier to make the tamales if the shucks are in one piece.

C) Build the Tamales

After the corn shucks are soft, take some of them out of the water, shake the water off, lay them on the counter on a towel. For clarity now, we will present a series of pictures with the instructions so you can see just how the tamale is built (Click on Picture Thumbnails for an enlarged View):

	Pick up a shuck, lay it across the palm of your hand with the small end toward your fingers. scoop up about 1/2 c of the Masa dough with a spatula, and then smear it on the shuck.
	Cover about left 2/3 of the shuck with Masa, leave 1/3 on the right uncovered. Similarly, cover the bottom 2/3 of the shuck, and leave the top 1/3 uncovered. The picture will help you see what we are trying for here. You need to leave the top and side uncovered so you can fold it up later. Now, go to the next shuck and do the same, laying them out on the counter as you put the masa on them. I like to do 5 or ten at a time like this.
	When you have covered 5 to 10 of the shucks with Masa, it is time to add the meat. Take about 1 tablespoon of meat, and lay it on the masa about 1 in. from the left edge.
	Starting on the left side (the side where the Masa dough goes all the way to the edge), roll the tamale all the way to the right edge. Now, fold the top of the shuck over like an envelope and lay tamale on the counter with the fold on the under side. Roll the next one the same until all your shucks with masa on them are rolled.
Now, get more shucks and put masa on them the same way. Then roll the meat in them. Keep doing this until all the tamales are built. You will have about 4 dozen or more. D) Cook the Tamales
	To cook the tamales, You need a very large pot that has something in the bottom to keep the tamales out of the water while they steam (the steamer we use is pictured on the tamale ingredients page) . Add about 3 pints of water to the pot, then start stacking the tamales upright until full. The envelope end of the tamale will be on the bottom, the open end of the tamale should be on top, as pictured at left. Continue to fill the pot. The tamales need to pack tight enough that they do not fall over and begin to unfold.
Cover the pot, and bring the water to a boil and then reduce heat to medium low and cook for at least 2 hours. Check water several times and add more if it is getting low, you DON’T want to boil it dry. Please note . . . those of you who forgot to save the chicken broth will probably be the ones to boil the tamales dry. I think you know who you are. Anyway, for the rest of you, Add more water as you need to. When done, take one tamale out and leave it on the counter for about 5 minutes to test. Unwrap it and it should be firm, with no raw masa. When done, remove all the tamales and let them cool on the counter, then put in bags for the freezer, 6 to a bag. If you have one of those Vacuum sealers, those are ideal. You can save the tamales in the freezer indefinitely if they are vacuum sealed. If you use zip lock bags, they will stay for up to a year in the freezer.
